The American security company Blackwater dreamed of privatizing war. But then, four of its employees were killed in Fallujah and their corpses hung from a bridge. Now, a trial in the US will decide on the company's future.

The Blackwater security consulting firm in North Carolina likes to think of itself as the future of war. Only recently, the company announced it would soon be dispatching a whole brigade of soldiers to the world's battlefields. Whether on behalf of governments, the EU or NATO, the firm feels equally comfortable assuming the role of pacifying an Iraqi town or the Darfur region. A peace-keeping company, complete with its own medical service and troop logistics. Faster, cheaper and not one iota less professional than governmental armed forces, so the company's management says. (more)

US lambasted on secret detainees

The head of the International Committee of the Red Cross has criticised the US for refusing to let it visit secret detainees held in the "war on terror".

Jakob Kellenberger said their names should not be concealed "no matter how legitimate the grounds for detention".

The US has been accused of operating secret prisons and transporting some detainees to states which use torture. (more)

British Inventor Unveils 8000 MPG Car

London, England (AHN)—A British inventor unveils the world's most fuel-efficient vehicle, a three-wheel “TeamGreen” car capable of doing 8,000 miles to the gallon.

The 45-year-old inventor, Andy Green, from the University of Bath, built his budget eco-motor for just £2,000, and will be the sole British contender for the title of the world's most fuel-economic car in a global competition being held later this month.

It has taken Mr. Green more than two years to design and build the car, which will be the fourth eco-vehicle he has built. He holds the British record for fuel-efficiency, with 6,603 miles to the gallon in a previous car.

According to the report, the new vehicle is powered by a single cylinder four-stroke engine with a capacity of just 35cc and runs with a special management system incorporating fuel injection.

A spokesman for Bath University says, "Andy Green is keeping the spirit of the lone British inventor who takes on the world very much alive."

Drug Firms "Hype Up Diseases to Boost Sales"

Drug companies are inventing diseases to sell more of their products, it has been claimed. Scientists have accused major pharmaceutical firms of "medicalising" problems like high cholesterol or the symptoms of the menopause in a bid to increase profits.

Experts from around the world will meet in Australia today to discuss what they have labelled "disease-mongering".

The group, which includes experts from Britain, will gather in Newcastle, New South Wales, where researchers have been examining the issue. David Henry and Ray Moynihan, of Newcastle University, claim the industry is exaggerating conditions and turning them into something more serious.

Would you believe your grandmother undergoing trial in Criminal Court? Believe it! That’s what’s happening. On April 20, eighteen grannies ranging in age from 59 to 91 (the mean age is about 72) will be tried in Manhattan’s Criminal Court on a charge of Disorderly Conduct.

We women, who call ourselves the Granny Peace Brigade, are being tried for the action we performed on October 17, 2005, when we attempted to enlist at the Times Square Recruiting Center. Our over-all purpose was to try and alert an apathetic public to the immorality, the illegality and the unconscionable destructiveness of our occupation of Iraq. Our specific intention was to try and replace the young people deployed in Iraq so that they’d have a chance to live a long life as we grandmas have. But, we found the door locked and, seemingly, nobody inside. We buzzed the bell repeatedly, and the eldest, Marie Runyon (only 90 at the time), banged on the door with her cane, demanding that we be given access. No response. We began to think that Uncle Sam didn’t want us.

Blair refuses to back Iran strike

TONY Blair has told George Bush that Britain cannot offer military support to any strike on Iran, regardless of whether the move wins the backing of the international community, government sources claimed yesterday.

Amid increasing tension over Tehran's attempts to develop a military nuclear capacity, the Prime Minister has laid bare the limits of his support for President Bush, who is believed to be considering an assault on Iran, Foreign Office sources revealed.

Judge criticises US over Swiss scholar's visa

A federal judge in the United States has criticised the Bush government for delaying a decision on a visa for one of Europe's best-known Muslim intellectuals.

Paul Crotty made his comments during a hearing on whether Swiss philosopher and lecturer Tariq Ramadan can be allowed entry to the US after being barred two years ago.

In January 2006 the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a suit against Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice for denying visas to foreign scholars, including Ramadan.

Hunters 'blockade' seal activists in Canada

Anti-seal hunt activists in Canada say fishermen and hunters have trapped them in their hotel in Quebec to stop them documenting a cull.

About a dozen activists and journalists say some 60 angry locals prevented them from leaving the hotel in Blanc-Sablon, on the border with Newfoundland.'

Members of Humane Society International said that earlier their van had been run off the road.

In this paper, I call for a serious investigation of the hypothesis that WTC 7 and the Twin Towers were brought down, not just by impact damage and fires, but through the use of pre-positioned cutter-charges. I consider the official FEMA, NIST, and 9-11 Commission reports that fires plus impact damage alone caused complete collapses of all three buildings. And I present evidence for the controlled-demolition hypothesis, which is suggested by the available data, testable and falsifiable, and yet has not been analyzed in any of the reports funded by the US government.

Iraq’s Interior Ministry admits death squads

Iraq’s Interior Minister acknowledged the existence of death squads and other unauthorized armed groups that carry out sectarian killings in Iraq.

In a BBC interview, Bayan Jabr blamed the killings on special security forces that provide protection for ministers and key installations as well as other licensed protection agencies in Iraq. He also implicated the involvement of about 30,000 civilian security guards operating in the country.

Doctor jailed for refusal to go to Iraq

The RAF doctor Malcolm Kendall-Smith has been sentenced to eight months in jail.

The flight lieutenant was found guilty by a court martial today of failing to comply with lawful orders after refusing to serve in the Iraq war.

The 37-year-old, who has dual British and New Zealand citizenship, had denied five charges which relate to his deployment, training and equipment fitting.

Richardson, 25, said she found the question on a practice test for a math final she was studying for in March. The question read, "Condoleezza holds a watermelon just over the edge of the roof of the 300-foot Federal Building, and tosses it up with a velocity of 20 feet per second." The question went on to ask when the watermelon will hit the ground, based on a formula provided. The question propagates a racial stereotype and denigrates Secretary of State Rice, said Perryman. While Rice's last name wasn't mentioned, the reference was clear, he said.

A recently retired two-star general who just a year ago commanded a U.S. Army division in Iraq on Wednesday joined a small but growing list of former senior officers to call on Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to resign.

"I believe we need a fresh start in the Pentagon. We need a leader who understands teamwork, a leader who knows how to build teams, a leader that does it without intimidation," Maj. Gen. John Batiste, who commanded the Germany-based 1st Infantry Division in Iraq, said in an interview on CNN.

On May 29, 2003, 50 days after the fall of Baghdad, President Bush proclaimed a fresh victory for his administration in Iraq: Two small trailers captured by U.S. and Kurdish troops had turned out to be long-sought mobile "biological laboratories." He declared, "We have found the weapons of mass destruction."

A secret fact-finding mission to Iraq -- not made public until now -- had already concluded that the trailers had nothing to do with biological weapons. Leaders of the Pentagon-sponsored mission transmitted their unanimous findings to Washington in a field report on May 27, 2003, two days before the president's statement.

British computer hacker 'could be sent to Guantanamo', court told

A British man accused of being behind the largest ever hack of US government computer networks could end up at Guantanamo Bay, his lawyer has claimed.

Much of the hearing was taken up with argument over whether Mr McKinnon would be subject to Military Order Number One - a legal procedure which enables the president to specify that suspects can be detained indefinitely.

$286 BILLION International tourist dollars NOT coming to America

US market share of international tourism is at an all-time low, dropping 35 per cent between 1992 and 2004, which translates into $286bn in lost revenue, according to the Travel Industry Association of America (TIA).

The US State Department and the DHS in January announced a series of measures to streamline travel to the US, including reducing wait time for visas; and setting up a "redress" process to address travellers' complaints about their poor treatment at borders or consulates abroad.

The TRUE Cost of The Iraq War

Nobel Laureate Joseph E. Stiglitz and Harvard budget expert Linda Bilmes plan to present this week a paper estimating the cost of the Iraq War at between $1-2 trillion. This is far higher than earlier estimates of $100-200 billion.

Here is their statement:

"NEW STUDY SUGGESTS ECONOMIC COST OF IRAQ WAR MUCH LARGER THAN PREVIOUSLY RECOGNIZED"

A new study by two leading academic experts suggests that the costs of the Iraq war will be substantially higher than previously reckoned. In a paper presented to this week’s Allied Social Sciences Association annual meeting in Boston MA., Harvard budget expert Linda Bilmes and Columbia University Professor and Nobel Laureate Joseph E. Stiglitz calculate that the war is likely to cost the United States a minimum of nearly one trillion dollars and potentially over $2 trillion.

The study expands on traditional budgetary estimates by including costs such as lifetime disability and health care for the over16,000 injured, one fifth of whom have serious brain or spinal injuries. It then goes on to analyze the costs to the economy, including the economic value of lives lost and the impact of factors such as higher oil prices that can be partly attributed to the conflict in Iraq. The paper also calculates the impact on the economy if a proportion of the money spent on the Iraq war were spent in other ways, including on investments in the United States

“Shortly before the war, when Administration economist Larry Lindsey suggested that the costs might range between $100 and $200 billion, Administration spokesmen quickly distanced themselves from those numbers,” points out Professor Stiglitz. “But in retrospect, it appears that Lindsey’s numbers represented a gross underestimate of the actual costs.”

The Allied Social Sciences Association meeting is attended by the nation’s leading economists and social scientists. It is sponsored jointly by the American Economic Association and the Economists for Peace and Security.

Border Security System Left Open (Homeland SECURITY???)

A computer failure that hobbled border-screening systems at airports across the country last August occurred after Homeland Security officials deliberately held back a security patch that would have protected the sensitive computers from a virus then sweeping the internet, according to documents obtained by Wired News.

The documents raise new questions about the $400 million US-VISIT program, a 2-year-old system aimed at securing the border from terrorists by gathering biometric information from visiting foreign nationals and comparing it against government watch lists.

Bush 'is planning nuclear strikes on Iran's secret sites'

Political reversals at home and continued bad news from Iraq have dragged President Bush's standing with the public to a new low, at the same time that Republican fortunes on Capitol Hill also are deteriorating, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll.

The survey found that 38 percent of the public approve of the job Bush is doing, down three percentage points in the past month and his worst showing in Post-ABC polling since he became president. Sixty percent disapprove of his performance.

Ex-House speaker says U.S. made "enormous mistake" in occupation

Newt Gingrich, the former Republican Speaker of the House, told students and faculty at the University of South Dakota Monday that the United States should pull out of Iraq and leave a small force there, just as it did post-war in Korea and Germany.

"It was an enormous mistake for us to try to occupy that country after June of 2003," Gingrich said during a question-and-answer session at the school. "We have to pull back, and we have to recognize it."
